GLOBAL SOUTH ALLIANCE

Uniting Voices for the Digital Future of the Global South

The Global South Alliance (GSA) brings together 26 civil society organizations from Africa, Latin America, and Asia to defend digital rights and promote social justice in the digital age.

Who We Are

The Global South Alliance (GSA) is a coalition of 26 civil society organizations from across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Founded in 2022 through the collaboration between Aapti Institute (India), Data Privacy Brasil, and Paradigm Initiative (Nigeria), the GSA amplifies the voices of the Global South in international digital rights debates and fosters collective action for a fairer digital future.

The GSA’s work is mainly focused on unifying Global South NGOs dedicated to the advancement of digital rights. The Alliance’s language is grounded in Global South advocacy in digital rights, emphasizing local contexts, inequalities, and the historical dynamics of power in the digital sphere.

    Vision

The work of the GSA is guided by two main goals:

    • Challenging inequalities and asymmetries: Coordinating our work on issues such as visa discrimination, protection against discrimination, financial issues, and governmental repression against the work of civil society.
    • Raising our voices together: Coordinating our work on international processes such as the Global Digital Compact (GDC) and policy issues like digital public infrastructure (DPI), digital IDs, and data-driven public policies in the Global South.

Our Core Principles

Global South Alliance
  • Democratic participation of civil society in global debates on datafication
  • We advocate that digital rights are human rights
  • We believe in the potential of network governance
  • We act valuing accountability, dialogue, and support for the initiatives and strategies of entities seeking inclusion and social justice in the digital age
  • Global South Alliance

    Global Asymmetry Awareness (GAA)

Recognition of the deep disparities between the Global North and Global South in terms of technological development, data governance, and access to digital resources.

    Pillars:

    • Data and technology exploitation
    • Unequal deployment of AI (where the Global South usually provides data labeling work and raw data for training datasets)
    • International monitoring and corrective measures
  • Global South Alliance

    Data Solidarity

Promoting the ethical sharing and governance of data for the collective benefit of society, shifting away from individualistic, exploitative models toward collaboration and community control.

    Pillars:

    • Collective data rights (advocating for data as a common good)
    • Community-led governance (promoting participation in decision-
      making processes on data use)
    • Equitable benefits (ensuring fair distribution of data-derived value)

Our Network of Change

The GSA is composed of 26 civil society organizations from Africa, Latin America, and Asia, working collectively to shape more equitable, inclusive, and rights-centered digital ecosystems.

Join Our Global South Mailing List

For stronger and more focused collaboration among organizations, activists, and experts working in the Global South on issues of datafication, we created a mailing list (globalsouthdata) where we share different types of information.
We understand that stronger coordination from the Global South is necessary, given the important issues we face and that are debated in international forums. Coordinating a communication and engagement strategy, as well as sharing information, events, agendas, and reports, are the main goals of this list.
Our mailing list is public and open. If you would like to join, simply subscribe at this link.
